Two bedroom village property with countryside views_Bubion_AL10_04

This magical two-bedroom cottage, named for the soothing sound of water that runs in a channel alongside the house, sits at the bottom of Bubión, a quiet village on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Cosy and intimate, the downstairs has many authentic rural features: an open fireplace and a red-tiled floor in the traditional style, a large dining table and a hundred-year-old fig tree giving shade outside the front door. Wooden ceiling beams lay over flat stone, a typical design from olden times. The house is at least six hundred years old, dating back to Bubión’s Moorish inhabitants.

Open a bedroom window and you will see an apricot tree whose branches spread across an enchanted garden. Here you’ll find a variety of trees and plants: walnut, bay, rosemary, lavender and roses. Spend the afternoon in the enclosed garden, lying on a deck chair with a breeze carrying the scent of jasmine and the sound of birdsong or goat bells. Look around you for the sweeping views of the Poqueira Ravine, the mountains and the Mediterranean sea beyond.

Peace and contemplation

The house offers an atmosphere of great warmth, and an air of quiet and calm.

The upstairs has two bedrooms and a large sitting area with a coffee table and sofa. The living room opens onto a stone verandah. By day, the verandah offers sun and a quiet, contemplative place to read or write. By night, the verandah is the perfect spot to sit and watch the moon, or view a brilliant canvas of stars, with a glass of wine.

The house is prepared for winter, it has electric radiators as well as a wood burner and the open fire already mentioned. Being so high up, it is crisp in the winter months with pure clear air. Visibility is extra sharp at this time of year and it’s not unusual to see the Rif of Morocco on the horizon.

The summer is delightful as the climate is fresher here than on the coast. Spring and autumn are even better! The house is an ideal base for anyone who loves a walking holiday, or for anyone who just wants to relax in a traditional and stunningly picturesque part of Andalucia.

A walker’s dream holiday spot

Although the house is perfect for those who love nature, there are plenty of other Spanish sights on offer.

Classified as a protected building, this is not your everyday standard holiday home. Although next to another house, it is very private. A path leads down to the next white village, Pampaneira, below Bubion. These mountain villages are, by their nature, a steep climb to some amenities but well worth it for their views and nature.

Bubion has lots of little bars and cafes in which to enjoy a cold drink or a coffee on a sunny morning. The cottage is at the bottom of the village and although you can walk the short distance to the bar, you can usually park by the village square and drive up.

Although these famous white villages are perfect holiday destinations in themselves, there is also scope for a different type of sightseeing too. For a day at the beach, the Mediterranean coast is an hour away and Órgiva, the main market town of Las Alpujarras, is less than half an hour away. Here you’ll find all the shops and facilities you’ll need, if you can’t find them in Bubion, as well as the eclectic mix of characters at the Thursday market. Granada, a wonderful city to visit, not least for the Alhambra Palace, is little more than an hour’s drive.
