We really didn't want to leave

We came to Bubión for an active holiday and La Casilla gave us a perfect base for a week of fantastic walking.

At the very bottom of the quiet mountain village of Bubión, this little village house has been completely renovated. An unpretentious and simple house of genuine character with century old thick stone and earth walls, traditional beam-and-stone ceilings and a few original nooks and crannies, the perfect location for a quiet holiday for two.

Tucked away below the church and village square, one enters from a little walkway into the dining area, divided off from the kitchen by a chunky chestnut kitchen counter. Access through an open arch into the cosy living room, with a glass-fronted wood stove for the colder winter months. From here a wooden staircase leads up to the double bedroom, where a gallery leads round to a little upstairs sitting area opening onto a small railed balcony with the best uninterrupted views of the Poqueira Valleys, encompassing the surrounding mountains which sweep down to the Mediterranean with Morocco beyond.

The walking is outstanding with plenty of variety for all fitness levels

Bubión has everything you could need and is a delightful mountain village.

The only disadvantage of being at the bottom of the village is the climb back up to the top, where the car park, shops, bars and restaurants are. The advantages are immediately evident, no traffic, rural peace, hidden away from the rest of the world, the “real” Alpujarras  all around you.

ooOoo

20 meters from your door is the famed European GR7 route, nearly 9000 km long, which crosses the Alpujarras before continuing all the way across Europe as far as Greece. Heading up or down hill, from here it runs through magnificent, wild, high mountain scenery, connecting with a choice of any number of walks, all of them truly wonderful.

Cosy, quiet and convenient

Superb walking country, whether you want challenging mountain routes or just time to re-charge and relax

Bubión, and the surrounding area have become increasingly popular with active tourism. It is in such a privileged setting below the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains – looking out over the Poqueira Valley and down to the Mediterranean in the distance. Settings do not come much more spectacular than this. The village is small and welcoming, with its characteristic narrow, winding streets, flat roofs, beamed and stone ceilings it has been named a region of considerable artistic and historical importance ….

….But all this comes at a price, it´s old streets are too narrow, and often too steep, for cars so be prepared to do some walking – La Casilla is at the bottom of the village, nicely hidden away from the general hubbub of village life.  From the balcony nothing but open space beyond, on clear evenings you can watch the sunset across the distant Mediterranean and behind the silhouette of the mountains of Morocco on the horizon.

Amber

This place is an absolute gem. We have stayed in dozens of properties around the world and this is one of our favourites by far. Such an amazing location, with a very attentive and helpful host. It is a very clean, cozy, charming and comfortable base to explore Bubion and the surrounding area.
