Mecina is a blissfully quiet, authentic village among some of Spainʼs loveliest rural scenes. On the edge of this pretty spot is a welcoming little village house – offering a charming place for a relaxing break.

The house is on two floors, built in the traditional way of Las Alpujarras, attractively decorated and presented in a rustic style. Its loving owner, who lives in an adjoining property, has an eye for detail and has taken every care to make this cottage feel like a true home from home.

You enter into an exuberantly verdant garden patio, overflowing with wisteria and honeysuckle, roses and rosemary, bamboo and vines, all brought together with numerous potted plants. There is a table and chairs for your al fresco meals, sun loungers for your afternoon siesta and total tranquillity in this secret hideaway.

A great place for a relaxing break ...

... in varied and consistently beautiful scenery.

From the enclosed patio, double glass doors take you into the open plan kitchen/dining/sitting room. There is a small but well equipped kitchen area at the bottom of the stairs. This room has a dining table with four chairs and a sitting area with an open fireplace, a TV, sofa and two cosy arm chairs. The light floods in through large windows which look out to the patio.

Upstairs are two decent sized bedrooms, one double and one twin, and a bathroom. There are two furnished terraces, one of which is accessed directly from the double bedroom. Both terraces have views over the traditional flat roofs of the village to the mountains beyond.

This is a wonderful spot to enjoy the magnificent sunsets for which this area is famous. Underneath clear, unpolluted night skies you can enjoy picking out the constellations and pondering the vastness of the universe.

Almond orchards, olive groves, fig trees

And pure, unpolluted night skies.

From here you can roam far and wide – along ancient Roman and Moorish trails through a fascinating and varied landscape. An area rich in cultural and historical heritage, you can walk from the front door to Ferreirola (1 km) with its “Fuente Agria” spouting naturally carbonated water. Take in the view from the ancient threshing field under the shade of a giant chestnut tree, down to the Roman bridge and up the “Carihuelas”, zig-zagging ancient Roman paths cut into the edge of the gorge. Long ago this was one of the main trade routes connecting Granada to the coast.

There is a variety of activities and things to enjoy in this area. On offer are picturesque mountain villages, hiking trails though unspoilt landscapes and a real taste of the unique way of Alpujarran country life. Discover the ancient Moorish irrigation channels, still in use and still delivering pure water to the terraced olive groves.

And ooh the almond blossom! It blooms in the heart of winter but seeing the mountainsides veiled in such delicate blossom you understand why people make the pilgrimage from all over the world to see the spectacle.

This house is conveniently close to a friendly restaurant which serves local fare – La Cueva Mora Luna – locally known as the Piano Bar (enjoy their succulent roast pork and genial atmosphere). The “largest” nearby village is Pitres (3 km away). It has a variety of bars and restaurants, a good supermarket, a bank, medical centre, pharmacy … and an interesting Friday morning market.

If you wish to venture out of the mountains, Granada city with the Alhambra, its old Moorish streets and modern shopping centres, is just over an hour away. And almost equidistant is the Mediterranean coast where you can enjoy the beaches, bars and seafront restaurants.
