A family home with authentic Andalucian style
This comfortable villa has modern facilities but retains the character true to this special region.
Located in the southern foothills of Sierra Nevada National Park – 2 km off the road that connects Orgiva to Las Alpujarras – a well maintained track winds through the Alpujarra ‘mountainscape’ – it’s like nowhere else on earth.
Here there is little to interrupt the total peace and tranquillity – maybe a passing goat or two or the magical sound of a flock of bee-eaters as they flit across the valley.
Centuries ago this was a humble country home, the original (seriously) thick walls and beautiful chestnut beams verify its origins. Now, keeping up with the times, it has been converted into a modern and welcoming family holiday home.
Through the entrance gates, a wide paved walkway brings you up to the covered porch and the entrance to the main living area. You enter into a narrow room with a glass fronted fireplace at one end and doors leading off, a few steps up, to the main bedroom and on the other side of the room, a few steps down to the twin bedroom and to the shower room.
Built in the centuries-old architectural style of the area
The rooms are decorated with delectable simplicity, reminiscent of the minimalism and functionality of traditional country living in Andalucia.
The main bedroom opens onto a furnished terrace, where a canopy of dense wisteria, jasmine and bougainvillea offers cool, scented shade during the heat of the day.
The bathroom has a slightly more modern twist, its fixtures and fittings are dark grey, with black slate floors and whitewashed walls. All in all, the monochrome colour scheme is quite original.
At the other end of the room, and looking out onto the furnished entrance porch, is the kitchen. This is a small but cleverly thought-out space, fitted in white with contrasting black floor and work surfaces. It is well equipped and you will find everything you need to prepare delicious meals which can be enjoyed on the porch (just outside and overlooking the pool).
The upstairs, accessed from the outside by way of a wide stairway, is a completely separate, self-contained, one-bedroom apartment. It is not rented out separately, but is ideal for anyone who wants to be slightly independent from the rest of the family – or perhaps for two couples travelling together with children.
A pool with a mountain panorama
By day, the mountain landscape is breathtaking, by night the stars are incredible.
The ambience of this apartment has a somewhat Nordic air – it is light, bright, minimalist and very appealing. It has a lovely study room with a glass-fronted fireplace and double French windows onto a small balcony. It’s easy to imagine spending long hours sitting at the desk, immersed in the peace and silence of your surroundings. There is also an armchair and footrest just in case you need a moment of “deep thought”.
The lounge is a pleasant, easy room – decorated in natural tones with a few splashes of colour (blue) – a bright blue sofa in front of the fireplace, a flat-screen TV and several wicker chairs complete the picture.
From here, doors open onto a large sun terrace looking over the pool, down across the valley and to the outline of the mountains on the horizon. Spend your evenings here lying on one of the loungers and gazing up at the heavens, you will never have seen skies so vast and so full of brilliant, sparkling stars – it’s a stargazers’ paradise!
The double bedroom is a charming, light room with windows looking down the valley and a glass door onto a small balcony. A small kitchen, not as well equipped as downstairs, but totally functional, and a shower room complete the layout.
Set in 3.5 acres of mountainside paradise, you can wander among the almonds, olives, oranges, lemons, figs, nisperos, grapes – no matter the season there will always be some ripe fruit waiting to be picked – although take care when picking the prickly pears!
Surrounding the house is a wonderful selection of terraces, secret gardens and secluded seating areas to choose from, and they all enjoy the magnificent views and peacefulness.
But the favourite spot for everyone must surely be the wonderful (8m x 5m) pool at the front of the house. With sun terraces (and sun loungers) at either end, the panorama is second to none, the views are unbeatable!
