A country house with a convenient town nearby

The town of Gaucín is only a short distance away – a 10 minute drive, if that, where you’ll have a good choice of places to eat out and shop for groceries.

RM26_Large villa in Gaucin_04

This impressive villa is located along a country lane – a well maintained dirt track of 0.5 km, concreted in places, past mules in fields, meadows and gardens.

The house itself is built on four levels and there are further steps down to the stunning pool terrace. The property also has a separate self-contained cottage annexe, close by which is the first thing you see as you drive to the main gate.

The track is a little bumpy in places (but perfectly manageable if you drive slowly) and arrives at double iron gates to the parking area which is below the house. From the drive where you leave your car(s), there are two ways of accessing the main house.

One way is to the front door by a path of terracotta tiles, gradually rising over a series of five shallow steps. The path is made pretty with greenery, flower-filled urns and climbing plants. The other way is through an arched metal door directly to the pool terrace.

Look out from your bedroom tower

The top bedroom has a ‘high up feeling’ with wonderful views to across the valley.

Let’s start with the first of the bedrooms, bedroom (1) which is at the very top of the house. This is a double bedroom with a bathroom all to itself, located opposite.

Bedroom (1) has a double king-sized bed and has windows with views to the Genal valley and the sea beyond. Another window has expansive views to wooded hillsides while the last, arched window overlooks the barbecue terrace below.

This bedroom is furnished with two nightstands and two lamps, shelves full of books for holiday reading, a small chest of drawers, wardrobe and shelves for clothes. There is divan style seating in the corner and a wicker arm chair. The room has the benefit of a radio and air conditioning too.

The bathroom has a spacious walk-in shower, basin, WC and central heating radiator. Tiled in a charming blue and white delft theme, two small windows let in natural light.

A delightful little suntrap

The third floor bedroom has French windows to its own sun terrace, furnished with a small table and chairs, shaded by a mature tree.

Bedroom (2) is on the next floor down reached by a walkway landing and then down five stairs.

Bedroom (2) is a double with a king-sized bed, it has a Juliet balcony with views to the pool terrace as well as a private sun terrace. This private terrace has views to the pool and the valley beyond.

This spacious bedroom has en suite bathroom facilities which comprise a full bath tub with mixer shower taps, basin and WC. The bathroom is all in cream and buff tiles, elegant and classic. Also to hand is a shaving mirror over the basin, heated towel rail and a big, well-lit mirror. Two small windows let in light and air.

The bedroom has two chests of drawers, armchair and wooden chair, two big mirrors, a wardrobe and banquette seat. The décor here is all in cream and is calm and soothing.

As with all bedrooms in this house, as well as having wooden shutters, there are good quality curtains which are lined and heavy to keep out excess sun. But if that’s not sufficient to keep you cool, the room has the benefit of a portable air cooler.

Step out of this bedroom and 10 stairs down takes you to the next level where you’ll find another bathroom (with walk-in shower, WC and hand basin) and the living room.

The heart of the house

The house is classically styled as a country house with colonnaded terraces for the Mediterranean climate.

The large country-style kitchen, with its whitewashed walls, creamy fretwork fronted units and terracotta floor tiles, is at the heart of the villa.

The dining table seats eight. As well as being well equipped with kitchen appliances and utensils, it also has a wood burner. There are two armchairs in one corner by the window. The kitchen opens directly to the south-facing barbecue terrace.

Ground floor bedroom (3) leads off from the kitchen. This is a very pretty twin bedded room with double French windows to the barbecue terrace. Although the bathroom facilities for this room are not en suite, it has a bathroom to itself, just next door and ample wardrobe space as well.

The bedroom is a good size with space enough for a chest of drawers, nightstand, two reading lamps and a little armchair. The décor is all white and china blue, light and sweet.
The white bathroom next to this twin bedroom has a walk-in shower, WC and washbasin.

An aquamarine jewel sparkling in the sun

The swimming pool is surrounded by flowers and mature trees. With just the sound of the wind in the leaves and birds singing, it’s a restful haven.

The pool terrace is at the lowest level of the house and is absolutely superb. The swimming pool has views to the Genal valley and the Sierra Crestellina massif rising up on the left, with the misty blue of the sea in the distance. It’s all so beautiful.

There is a covered lounge area and a dining table for meals poolside. A mini fridge will keep your drinks cold, and with the sunbeds and parasols provided you can stay here relaxing and swimming all day.

The living room, which is on the first floor, opens directly onto the sundowner terrace on one side and the south-facing dining terrace on another with badminton and croquet if you are feeling a little active.

The living room is comfortable and cosy and has an open fire. There is a TV here, along with a writing desk and bookshelves full of interesting reading material. Three sofas are arranged around a coffee table and there is also some divan style seating next to the chimney breast under a window.

There are plenty of places to enjoy the sunshine

The villa has so many choices for outdoor enjoyment - be it lounging on the pool terrace, relaxing on the barbecue terrace one level above, or dining on the terrace a few steps up from there.

The sunny barbecue terrace overlooks the swimming pool and is the perfect place to while away a relaxing afternoon. The terrace is large enough to accommodate a gas-powered barbecue, a lounge suite of four armchairs, and two double sofas all arranged around two low, ceramic-topped tables –perfect for sipping afternoon drinks while admiring the view.

The terrace is decorated with bright flowers and shrubs and looks down to the gated pool.

Six steps up from the barbecue area leads to the portico that is the dining terrace. The dining terrace has a table which seats eight and leads directly into the living room. Follow the dining terrace round the house to come to the west-facing, colonnaded sundowner terrace.

This sundowner terrace opens out to a flat, lawned garden down four steps. The garden, bordered by trees and bushes (lavender, yucca, grapevine) is ideal for children to run around and play in. You can hear the gentle trickling of the little fish pool fountain around the corner.

A picture book cottage

The cottage annexe is the first thing you see when coming to the property, sweetly decorated in white and duck egg blue.

This villa has a self-contained cottage annexe close to the main house but separate from it. It’s a little hidden house amongst the trees.

The cottage has a double bedroom with en suite bathroom. The bedroom is decorated in an Indian style with ethnic-inspired textiles and window frame. There is space enough for a tall chest of drawers (which contains the hairdryer) and two nightstands with lamps.

The bathroom is decorated in white and blue and has a walk-in shower, heated towel rail, hand basin and WC. It has a small window for ventilation.

The main living space in the cottage comprises of a kitchen, dining table (seats 6) and sitting area.

The kitchen is fully equipped with a four-ring gas hob and electric oven, sink, under worktop fridge and a separate freezer. There are plenty of utensils, cutlery crockery and useful items like a coffee machine (Nespresso), juicer, toaster, kettle and a Bose iPod docking station.

The living area has an open fireplace and two double sofas around a coffee table. Best of all, this living room opens to the outside: a private lawned garden on the east side and to the south, a Juliet balcony with views to the drive, hills of green trees, and down the Genal valley to the sea.

More about this region

Ronda and Mountains

Ronda and its surrounding landscape has all that is symbolic of Andalucía—the land of passion, literary inspiration, bullfighting and romantic bandit stories. Its famous Puente Nuevo bridge, spanning El Tajo gorge, is unforgettable. Ronda is a magnificent city with a rich culture and history but this region also offers beautiful countryside, picturesque white villages like Gaucín, and the sea which is near enough for a day at the beach.
