Superb views to the sea
The house has views of the landscape and sea which change with the light throughout the day.
This stunning detached villa, in picturesque Gaucín, sits in over a third of an acre of landscaped, terraced gardens, complete with private swimming pool.
The views from the house are exceptional, whether of the village, the ruined castle above it, the surrounding mountainside, or the uninterrupted vista down the valley of the river Genal to the distant Rock of Gibraltar—even the Rif Mountains of Morocco.
While the secluded setting makes it feel as if you are out in the countryside, the bars, restaurants and shops of Gaucín are all within ten minutes’ walk.
Elegant and spacious, beautifully furnished throughout, the house has four double/twin bedrooms, all en suite and sleeps up to eight people—ideal for couples or families with children, preferably over the age of 5. The owners have decorated the villa with taste and style, using artwork pieces collected over the years.
Decorated with designer flair
This delightful villa is filled with paintings and sculptures from the many local artists’ studios.
The main entrance, a large double-door from a former convent, leads to the designer-built spiral staircase.
The centre of the house, on the first floor, has a large living room opposite an equally large formal dining room.
The living room opens onto a beautiful forty-foot long, five-arched covered loggia that runs along the front of the house, overlooking the garden and offering amazing views to the coast over miles of unspoiled countryside. At one end of the loggia is the outdoor dining area, ideal for long lunches and evening meals al fresco.
Facing south-west, it is also a delightful place to sit in the evening with a refreshing drink and watch the often unbelievably beautiful sunsets.
The formal indoor dining room is equipped with a custom-made chestnut dining table and chairs for fourteen people, and the windows look over the rear rock garden and up to the ancient Moorish castle.
Make yourself at home
The house has features for entertainment and comfort combined with a welcoming and warm ambience.
Both the living room and the dining room have log burning Nordic stoves (with glass doors) and the house also has full under-floor heating for the cooler winter months.
There is a satellite TV (Free-Sat with all UK digital channels), WiFi, DVD player and DVDs, video player and video library, HiFi with Bluetooth connectivity, an internet-enabled Roberts radio and all the rest that make a house a home, including board games, and an interesting variety of books.
The large kitchen is fully equipped with a La Canche gas oven and hob, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, china, glasses and cutlery.
There are plenty of saucepans and other cooking gear. The door from the kitchen leads to a small breakfast terrace overlooking the pool and garden.
Adjoining the kitchen is the indoor breakfast area, which faces the spacious bar and pantry area, with large refrigerator/freezer, and separate drinks fridge.
The bedrooms in this villa are located on three storeys: the ground floor, first floor and at the top of the house.
The top-floor double bedroom, with air-conditioning and an en suite bathroom, opens onto a large terrace which provides uninterrupted views up to the castle and the surrounding mountains. The king-sized double bed can easily be converted into two full-sized single beds, if required.
The double bedroom on the first floor also has a spacious en suite bathroom, with bath/shower and WC. The double-aspect windows of the bedroom, which include a Juliet balcony, provide wonderful views of the surrounding mountains and the valley of the river Genal, leading down towards Gibraltar.
On the ground floor there are two further bedrooms, both of which open onto the garden. One is a twin bedroom with a large en suite bathroom with bath/shower and WC. The other is a double bedroom with air-conditioning and an en suite bathroom with large shower.
Also on the ground floor is the utility room with washing machine and tumble-dryer, iron and ironing-board.
The mature garden has secluded corners for quiet contemplation as well as offering games for fun.
The hexagonal swimming pool is surrounded by mature gardens, terraces on different levels, a boule court, table tennis, darts and a barbecue area.
The pool and garden offer complete privacy and the garden, with its many secluded corners, is planted with an abundance of flowering shrubs, fruit trees, almond and olive trees and many beautiful flower beds.
You’ll find sunbeds and comfortable outdoor chairs around the pool, which is salt-water chlorinated (no chemical chlorine). Swimming at night with its underwater lighting is an experience not to be forgotten!
The comfortable seating area surrounding the Buddha statue in the Japanese garden is wonderfully shaded and cool, as is the hammock which hangs between two trees over the centre of the boules arena (with hooks for easy removal when a game is in progress).
The property is supplied with mains water, 220 volt electricity and gas, for heating, hot water and cooking.
This part of Andalucía is a year-round paradise
The summer climate is ideal, combining endless sunshine with low-humidity and just the right amount of gentle mountain breezes.
Gaucín is a typical, unspoilt white village, with many food shops, a chemist, banks, bars and several restaurants. Overlooking the village are the ruins of a Moorish castle giving incomparable views over to the Mediterranean coast, North Africa and Gibraltar.
Inland you see the state-owned cork forests which are a nature reserve.
The village has a public pool with tennis courts, a couple of riding schools are also found in the vicinity. Throughout the year Gaucín has many fascinating fiestas, traditional Saints days and the ‘Semana-Santa’ (holy-week) processions.
In August Gaucín celebrates its ‘Feria’ with fairground and dancing.
In the cooler months Gaucín is very popular for walking, exploring, horse-riding, mountain-biking and bird watching. Nearby there are also many other beautiful towns and villages. The grandest is Ronda with its famous gorge and the oldest bullring in Spain.
A few kilometres down the valley is the river Genal, a good spot for fishing, swimming and exploring.
The Mediterranean beaches are half an hour’s drive away, while the Atlantic coast with its fine white sand and famous wind and kite-surfing is one and a half hour’s drive.
The house book is full of notes on how things work, and what to do if they don’t, as well as tips about what to do in emergencies, maps with suggested places to visit, opening hours etc. The visitors’ book and leaflet box has more information about the area and local restaurants.
