Delight in all that is Mediterranean

The design of this villa uses the panorama of the green landscape to maximum effect

RM60_Spacious home on the edge of Gaucin_04

Located at the very edge of the village of Gaucín, at the end of a country lane, is this superb holiday villa. It has the added of advantage of being convenient to walk into town but is secluded enough to feel like you are in your own private locale. The view is amazing and the layout of this villa makes full use of the panorama.
You can drive down to the house (Gaucín, like many traditional white villages has narrow streets, so the drive may be steep and tight in places, but certainly navigable) and park on the forecourt which has space for two cars.
Alternatively you could park on the street above the property before walking down the lane to the house (2 minute walk). The house has double iron gates to the entrance courtyard, decorated with potted orange and lemon trees on all sides and shaded by mature carob and Mediterranean oak trees.

The pool terrace is so delightfully pretty

The terrace is full of white daisies and vermilion geraniums. The only sound is birdsong and the gentle ripple of the swimming pool

RM60_Spacious home on the edge of Gaucin_05

The house has been built to incorporate the living rock which is cleverly used in the rockery, around the courtyard and for the swimming pool terrace.

The back of the house (which actually has the front door entrance in it) is painted a coppery red and, what with all the ferns and aspidistras on the veranda, is a slightly mysterious and shady place to sit. The usual entrance to the house is by the kitchen at the side of the house, and this door opens to the bright and very cheerful interior.

From the entrance courtyard you can go directly down to the swimming pool terrace, it’s a flight of ten steps. The pool is a good sized rectangular one in a cool and soothing shade of aqua green, accessed by shallow steps at one corner. To the back of the pool are seven steps leading into a wildflower meadow and south-facing part of the grounds.

Surrounded by marvellous nature

The villa has many terraces on which to relax, admire the view and bask in the sunshine

RM60_Spacious home on the edge of Gaucin_06

There are six sunbeds arranged around the swimming pool, all nicely shaded by mature trees and a parasol. A little table between the sunbeds on which to put cold drinks and snacks is to hand. The views from the pool look out to the horizon and misty hills to the sea. It is so peaceful and soothing. On one side of the pool terrace, the living rock wall is planted with shrubs and plants, you are surrounded by nature and it is marvellous!

Four steps down from the pool terrace is another smaller patio and then 13 steps down is a terrace that runs along the whole front of the house – it’s that long! This long walkway is shaded with olive trees and green climbing plants. is It’s furnished with a mosaic topped table and a sweet little pool– it’s so restful just to sit and watch the fish.

The walkway terrace continues around the property. You can gain access into  the house from the end of this terrace  – 13 steps up leads you to a side door to the laundry room (with washing machine, tumble dryer, iron, utility sink).

Let's go into the house ...

The first room is the kitchen, decorated in cream and white, the whole effect is clean and calming.

You enter the house by the kitchen door and the first thing you see is the lightness and brightness of the interior.  The kitchen is full of sunshine with full length windows letting in light and the amazing views. Because there are so many windows and you can see the landscape all round, the sensation feels a little like you are floating in the air.

The kitchen is well stocked with crockery and equipment, all nicely arranged and conveniently organised.

A kitchen table and four stools are in the centre of the room, with another wooden table and five chairs by the windows for an informal breakfast eating area.

One marble topped kitchen sink looks out to the landscape, another double sink is closer to the 5-ring electric hob (with full width electric oven). There are too many cookery items to list, but the essentials are: dishwasher, microwave, kettle, coffee pots, cafetières, blenders, a CD player for music while you cook and a big fridge-freezer (with ice dispenser).

Vivid textiles are used with flair

The colour scheme for the first bedroom is white, but bright accents make things stylish

Bedroom (1) is off the living room, this is a double bedded room with sliding glass doors along one wall to let in the full impact of the stunning view and the balcony. Another window is to the side, letting in the light from the dining terrace next door.

The room is a good size and has space for two night stands with lamps, two armchairs, two wooden chairs and some carved cabinets and cupboards.

The en suite bathroom is through an arabic-style archway giving a hint of the treat to follow. This bathroom is beautifully tiled in pale blue, navy and white and lit with Moroccan lamps – the whole experience is exotic and stylish. There is plenty of space for personal grooming with a large, well it mirror above the marble-topped basin, walk-in shower and bath tub. The WC is placed separately from the other fittings. To the side is a walk-in dressing room, clothes storage area and a full length mirror.

Downstairs to bed....

The bedroom curtains in this villa are heavy and lined, and there are also blinds to keep out the sun

RM60_Spacious home on the edge of Gaucin_09

The other two bedrooms are on the lower floor, down 13 stairs from the living room (past the laundry/utility room) and then two more steps down to bedrooms (2) and (3) which are next door to each other.

Bedroom (2) has glass sliding doors to the views (just like bedroom (1)). It has a double king-size bed, built-in wardrobes, two bedside tables and reading lamps above the bed. It also has a writing desk and a couple of small wooden chairs. This bedroom has a private terrace which overlooks the walkway terrace below.

The en suite bathroom is tiled in shades of green. Light comes in from stained glass cut into the bedroom wall as well from Moroccan ceiling lamps. There is a marble topped wash basin, WC and mirror, with a small window to the side of the house. As with the bathroom for bedroom (1) a hairdryer is provided.

A delightful twin bedroom

The twin room is decorated in a light and pleasing style

RM60_Spacious home on the edge of Gaucin_10

A wall whose shelves are lined with books, makes a tiny corridor that takes you to bedroom (3).

Bedroom (3) is a double twin-bedded room. This might be ideal for children whose parents will be sleeping next door in bedroom (2). The furnishings in this room comprise a dressing table with mirror, two wooden chairs and one small easy chair. There is hanging space set into the wall and reading lights above each bed. There is access to the outside terrace and views. Although this room doesn’t have an en suite bathroom, there is access (via a small room with a baby’s cot) to a light and bright bathroom.

The bathroom has a walk-in shower, hand basin and WC (there’s also hairdryer). If you go through this bathroom you can get directly to the outside pool terrace by a lockable door.

Books on every subject

The living room is classical but interesting because of all its colourful artwork, textiles and ornaments.

The living room has everything for relaxation and entertainment: TV, a DVD player and a range of DVDs, Bluesky sound system, lots of books for all ages, board games and an iPod docking station.

The furnishings are comfy and cosy with a three-seater sofa, three armchairs and an open fireplace.

One wall is made up of sliding glass doors to let in those amazing views – and to give access to a furnished dining terrace. What a wonderful place to eat at any time of the day!

Off the living room is the entrance lobby to the front door proper. This lobby has a large sideboard and an umbrella stand with walking sticks, umbrellas (hopefully they won’t be needed!), beach and tennis racquets. There is a small cloakroom to the right, housing a WC and washbasin.

Useful and detailed information about the area is provided in folders including ideas for trips out and restaurant recommendations.

Gaucín itself is a picturesque white village with many attractions, historic and gastronomic. Here you’ll find convenient shops as well as a cash machine, pharmacy and weekly market. Ronda is near enough for a day trip, as are the sandy beaches of Manilva and Sabinillas.

More about this region

Ronda and Mountains

Ronda and its surrounding landscape has all that is symbolic of Andalucía—the land of passion, literary inspiration, bullfighting and romantic bandit stories. Its famous Puente Nuevo bridge, spanning El Tajo gorge, is unforgettable. Ronda is a magnificent city with a rich culture and history but this region also offers beautiful countryside, picturesque white villages like Gaucín, and the sea which is near enough for a day at the beach.
