The landscape in this part of Málaga province is something special. The roads from the coast wind up to the mountain villages surrounded by green pastures.
This beautiful, three bedroom farmhouse is the essence of traditional Andalucían architecture. Just eight kilometres from the village of Gaucín, the villa is on a private estate of 120 acres of gorgeous countryside.
The owners lived in this house while their main residence was being built so the house has always been a very comfortable family home.
The farmhouse is built all on one level and it shows off some typical traditional Andalucian features, whose origins are from the Roman country villa: whitewashed walls, red pan-tiled roof, grey stone floors—all around a central courtyard.
The classic layout proves the theory that simple forms contribute to tranquillity and restfulness.
The house itself is set in a meadow of wildflowers which, in spring, is a riot of colour. The track from the main road to the estate is well kept and easily navigable. There is a paddock just to the left of the house, it’s the home of a resident horse – Descente – he’s old and good natured.
A much loved family home with real personality
The house is private and secluded—although the owners still live on the estate, they are some way away.
You enter into the central courtyard, which has another traditional Andalucían feature: a statuesque palm tree which is ‘de rigueur’ for any self-respecting country house. There are old-fashioned, scented roses around the main door of the villa, a superb white rambling rose—it’s all so pretty.
From the courtyard you go through solid wooden double doors into an impressive entrance lobby with a large mirror and wooden banquette.
To the left is the generous living room with a comfy sofa seating three, two armchairs and a big open fireplace. There is also a writing desk, wooden chest and low coffee table. The living room has a radio and Sony iPod docking station, central heating radiators and a ceiling fan.
The decor is elegant and classical with many fine ceramic ornaments set in shelves on either side of the fireplace. The furniture is solid and of high quality with many pieces having been brought from the Far East.
Dining indoors and out
The numerous dining areas in this villa are all delightful.
From the living room, separated by an arched wall is the spacious dining room. The teak dining table comfortably seats 6 to 8.
A beautiful big bay window, with a writing desk, looks out onto a garden planted with arum lilies (the lilies make a fantastic spring display of white trumpets), the horse paddock and olive groves beyond.
The dining room has various interesting cupboards housing glassware and napery, as well as a sideboard, TV and DVD player.
French doors from the living room open out onto the covered sun terrace which runs the length of the house. This terrace is furnished with a dining table seating 8, chairs, built-in bench and a wonderful ‘total relax’ area, complete with inviting sofas and armchairs covered in cushions.
This terrace is perfect for meals al fresco any time of day. There is also a full length day-bed for an afternoon nap or somewhere peaceful to read one of the many books on offer. Terracotta pots of bright geraniums and greenery make enhance the whole scene. This is an Andalucían lifestyle, as good as it gets!
The great outdoors
The views from this farmhouse are of countryside meadows to the horizon.
To the side of the inviting sun terrace, a gate opens on to the large pool terrace.
Here you’ll find the 8m x 4m swimming pool, rippling and turquoise—so inviting! The pool terrace has a full complement of sun beds where you can lie back and relax, enjoying the sumptuous views.
The numerous mature trees surrounding the pool offer shade and home to lots of birds whose singing is like soothing background music.
The pool terrace also has a glass topped dining table seating 6.
You can access the lily garden and then the pool area from the dining room (by ingenious little side doors at in bay window housing the writing desk).
The kitchen in the house is newly fitted and well-equipped. It leads off from the dining room. A utility room, to the back of the kitchen, houses the washing machine.
The master bedroom
The villa sleeps six guests in two double bedrooms and one twin.
To the right of the entrance hall, is the elegant master bedroom (1), bright and spacious with French windows that lead out onto its own furnished terrace.
The bedroom has built in wardrobes, a ceiling fan, chest of drawers, night tables and lamps. The decor is in pale colours which are calming and cool.
The en suite bathroom to this bedroom has both bath and walk-in shower, bidet, WC and marble topped washbasin. A huge mirror covers one wall above the bath.
The terrace is shaded by the greenery of a jasmine growing above the open rafters and it’s furnished with a coffee table, sofa, armchairs and padded stool. There are delightful views of the hills and Gibraltar in the distance.
It would be perfect to have a private breakfast here. This terrace is separated from the main sun terrace (the one leading from the living room) by an arched wall.
Plenty of space
Although this house sleeps six, there are other villas available on this country estate.
The other two bedrooms are accessed from the other side of the front courtyard. One is a double bedroom (2) and one is a twin (3). Both have en suite bathrooms with a walk-in shower, WC and washbasin. The rooms are decorated in the traditional Spanish country style with whitewashed walls and sloping cañar-faced ceilings.
The double bedroom (2) has French doors leading directly to the courtyard. It is slightly larger than the twin. It has built-in wardrobes, an armchair, chest of drawers and two bedside tables with lamps.
The twin bedroom (3) also leads directly off from the courtyard. It has built in wardrobes, a ceiling fan and each bed has its own bedside table and reading lamp.
As mentioned, the estate owners live on the estate in the main residence, but there are also two other rental cottages available (RM39) and (RM 48). Each one is independent and there is enough space and seclusion for everyone. Please check out the availability of all three houses if your family and friends form a larger group.
The location of this house, and the estate in general, is in a particularly beautiful spot. The picturesque towns of Gaucín and Colmenar are close by and both have a good selection of bars and restaurants as well as convenient amenities (shops, chemist, bank etc).
The area is ideal for walkers, bird watching and horse riding. Days out to the beach, or the attractions of Ronda and its environs are all within easy reach.
