Traditional character

The cottage is an authentic Alpujarran house from times gone by. With its whitewashed walls and chestnut ceiling beams, it has been renovated to be in keeping with the village.

AL16_04_short

This delightful traditional village house is situated close to the village square in the charming village of Capileira, one of the white villages in the High Alpujarra.

The approach to the house is through narrow, traffic-free streets, widening as you near the property into a quiet square where you can sit out, enjoy the sun and watch the world go by.

The house itself has all the character of a traditional mountain village home with its whitewashed walls and welcoming wooden door. The living area is open plan consisting of a sitting area, dining area and kitchen which can be curtained off when not in use.

Off this room is a another living room which in turn leads to the bathroom. The ceilings throughout are wood beamed, brown in the living area and white in the bedroom giving a softer, restful feeling for bed time. All the floors are laid with handmade terracotta tiles.

Snow-capped mountain peaks

In winter the sun glances off the Sierra Nevada, dazzling white against the blue sky. Snow can remain on the peaks well into early summer.

The views are out of this world—from the towering Sierra Nevada mountains above, to the Poqueira ravine below—and the air is so pure. There are many hiking trails in the gorge itself, or for the more adventurous, challenging walks in the Sierra Nevada. In winter the snow-capped mountain peaks are stunning. Birds of prey circle above and keep alert for sightings of wild boar and mountain goats during your travels.

Capileira has a fine church and there is a museum which exhibits the local handicrafts. The village itself is a popular tourist attraction with its many craft and gift shops, restaurants, bakeries and cafe-bars.

There are plenty of outside tables at which to sit and enjoy the sun, whilst having a well earned drink after walking through the maze of little lanes. Many springs, gushing with fresh mountain water, are dotted along these streets.

Capileira is the highest of the three white villages of the Barranco de Poqueira. The other two villages namely Bubion and Pampaneira, are just a few minutes’ drive away. Orgiva is 30 minutes’s drive down the mountain. Granada is just over an hours’ drive away.

Relax with a glass of vino

Sit outside in the quiet street enjoying the sun, and if the mood takes you, a glass of the local wine.

AL16_06_short

But back to the cottage … The sitting area is pleasantly decorated with white walls and dark wooden ceiling beams. It is furnished with a settee, two wicker chairs, small coffee table and side table.

The wicker chairs can be used for sitting outside in the quiet street while enjoying the sun and, if the mood takes you, a glass of the local wine. Portable gas and electric heaters are available for cooler evenings or winter rentals.

The kitchen, which is off this living area, is well equipped with adequate shelving, gas oven and four-ring hob. There is a small refrigerator, toaster, kettle, coffee pot and usual cooking utensils, cutlery and crockery. A wooden bar table with chairs provides for the dining arrangements. Curtains are fitted to close off the kitchen/dining area when not in use.

The main living room is at the back and separated from the entrance living area by a wood-beamed walk through.

Such a cosy cottage

Summer or winter, the cottage is a delightful base to return to.

AL16_07_short

The living room to the rear has a wood-burning stove which warms the room cosily during winter evenings. The traditionally thick stone walls help to retain this warmth while in summer they keep the room cool.

For relaxation there is a comfortable sofa and armchair together with a round, wooden coffee table. A TV is provided together with DVD player and a radio/CD player and there is connection for WiFi internet.

The bedroom is accessed by three small steps leading up from the living room. The double bed has a chair either side and corner shelves with table lamps.

The bathroom is off the other end of the living room. The bathroom has a bathtub with shower over, perfect for a soak after a long day’s hike. Again, white ceiling beams feature with white walls. A shower unit is fitted above the bath and there is a WC and hand basin.

Oranges and lemons

If you fancy a swim, a further 35 minutes’ drive from Orgiva brings you to the Mediterranean sea.

Should you wish to leave your mountain hideaway, wend your way down the mountain road, through the impressive Poqueira gorge, passing roadside orange and lemon vendors (in season), to the market town of Orgiva, the capital town of the western Alpujarras. The drive is approximately half an hour, depending on how many times you want to stop for yet another magnificent view or photo opportunity.

The milder climate and the fertile Guadalfeo river valley supports olive, avocado, orange and lemon groves in its surrounding countryside.

The weekly open air market is not to be missed, as much for its cast of colourful local characters as for its market stalls. Orgiva has supermarkets, banks, pharmacies, restaurants, bars, bakeries and a whole host of other interesting shops. The twin-spired church in the centre of town is a famous landmark and a photographers’ delight.

If you fancy a swim, a further 35 minutes’ drive from Orgiva brings you to the Mediterranean sea. There you’ll find inviting beaches and beach restaurants serving a delicious array of seafood.
